Feed me: Ergon Deli & Café, London

This is one of the best brunch spots in the city, based on some of the top London breakfast/brunch content creators. And it’s easy to see why. It’s nicely located in Mayfair, not far off from Oxford Street and the luxury stores of Regent Street, and the menu is breakfast but with a deliciously Greek twist.

They serve all day brunch, and other things as well, and the menu has good variety without offering too wide a range of food options. But, before we chat about the food, I’d like to mention the “queuing process” first.

Getting in

So, officially, it’s a walk-in system. But realistically you still have to queue – just online. I arrived and found the place semi-full but with a few tables free. I still had to join the virtual queue via the Dojo app and then I waited some 20 or so minutes to be seated at a table that had been free when I first arrived and remained so while I waited. I also found that the wait time didn’t really update and if you walk too far away from the restaurant (like across the street) your wait time increased. So it’s better to stand outside and wait… even though the app notice claims you can enjoy not waiting in a queue. So not quite a walk-in process. I was fortunate that I arrived just before the rush so I had a bit of room.

There was one waitress who managed the entire café (it’s just a few tables) and the deli is next door. So there’s someone moving between the two locations to clear plates and bring food. It’s smooth enough, though I can see that getting challenging on busier days and weekends. The deli and café are right next to each other but the rooms are not connected so everyone needs to exit the one and enter the other via the sidewalk/front entrances.

The food

I seriously enjoyed the food. It was beautifully, delicately flavoured and was served at the perfect temperature. The food is worth the hype.

I tried the popular pancake with Greek yoghurt, fruit and granola as well as the peinirli (a boat shaped piece of bread) with poached eggs and shakshuka. So so tasty! I highly recommend it. The bread looked like the crust would be quite hard but it was actually very soft and fluffy. One note about the poached eggs: you can only have them runny or well done – nothing in between.

The pancakes were divine. Fluffy and light. The Greek yoghurt was mixed with cream – making it extra creamy and delicious – and everything was drizzled with a lightly flavoured honey. As I was eating I noted that the flavours weren’t bold at all – they all complement each other so that each flavour tickles your taste buds. The pancakes offered a really nice mix of flavours and textures – the hard granola and dried fruit contrasted well with the soft and fluffy pancakes and juicy berries while the rich and creamy Greek yoghurt with the light honey taste added a great flavour mix.

The service

I interacted with three members of staff – the person who seated me (who was there then gone), the waitress serving all the café tables, and someone who brought in our food and cleared the dishes. I didn’t find anyone particularly rude or particularly friendly or helpful. They were polite and responsive when I tried to attract their attention and the waitress was knowledgeable when I asked about timings for food. They obviously knew what they were doing and they made sure my food arrived on time and tasty.

Overall, expect a tasty meal with a slightly niggly walk in process. If you’re in the area and looking for a good brunch with some Greek flavour
