Kenya: 5 things you should know
I’m a fan of a quick list of things to know about a destination before you visit it. Having worked with the Kenya Tourism Board for a number of years and having been a regular traveller to Kenya for at least a decade before that, I have a quick list of simple things you should know before you visit. The basics, really.
Kenya is located in the East of the African content with a stunning coastline along the Indian Ocean.
Your travel attractions vary: you can enjoy a magical safari for a few days before heading to the coast for the beach vacation of your dreams. Basically, get to Kenya for a nice well-rounded holiday.
Most Kenyans are bilingual – many speak KiSwahili and English – with some being multilingual. As diverse tribes call Kenya home, some Kenyans will also speak another language like Kikuyu or Luo. Fun fact: some of the phrases they use in The Lion King are actually Swahili phrases e.g. “Hakuna matata.” *They mix languages in The Lion King so not everythign is KiSwahili.
The local currency is the Kenyan Shilling (KSh).
The Maasai Mara is not the only wildlife park worth visiting. Check out places like Amboseli and Tsavo — Tsavo is so massive there is Tsavo East and Tsavo West National Parks.
